Rachel gazed up at Amelia with big brown eyes that looked too big for her face. Many brides lose weight before their wedding to be thin for their dress, but in Rachel’s case, Amelia thought it might be due to the stress she felt over being the center of attention.
“Hey,” she said. “I’m going to make this be a day you’ll remember with joy. Okay?”
Rachel nodded. “I feel stupid. I know it’s not a big deal, it shouldn’t be but—”
“It is for you and for many other people.” Amelia held out her hand. “That’s why I have a spell for it.”
Rachel took Amelia’s hand and clutched at the lapels of her blue robe as she stood up. “What do I do?”
“Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and open your mind to my magic.”
“Okay.” Rachel’s shoulders sagged as she blew out air slowly.
Amelia took a small vial from her pocket. It was a clear glass heart that was the size of a plum. It was filled with apple juice and didn’t have magical powers, but she had learned it helped the recipient believe in the spell, which strengthened the effectiveness of the magic. “Hold out your hand,” she commanded, and she gave the bride the inactive potion. She then raised her arms up from her sides, palms up. The warm tingle of her magic grew from her core and flowed through her arms toward Rachel as Amelia spoke in a low, soft voice.

The time is right, the union is true, allow Rachel’s joy to flow.
With every word, with every step, let her love for Liam shine.
The day is here, to seal their fate, for a future divine.”
Vapor swirled around Rachel, and the slight chill of the fog made her gasp. Amelia said, “Open your eyes and drink the potion.”
Rachel watched the mist evaporate with big eyes. This time they were shining with happiness instead of fear, and she drank the juice. “Am I supposed to feel better immediately?”
“You should.”
“Good. Because I do.” She paused in thought and then smiled broadly. “I’m not the least bit anxious about walking down the aisle.” Her brow knit for a moment. “In fact. I think I’m excited about it.”
She laughed softly as Amelia smiled too. “I’m so glad to hear it. Now, I’ve got a wedding to get dressed for, and so do you.”
Rachel stepped forward and hugged Amelia. “Thank you so much for this. You’ve made it the perfect day.”
“No, Liam and you have. I’ll see you soon.” Amelia let herself out and hurried to her car. She had to get home and fight for time in the bathroom with her three sisters. But it didn’t matter. The important thing was she’d helped another bride be able to appreciate her wedding day to the fullest, and it was one of those special moments she loved about her job. It made her smile all the way home.
Once she got to the house, Amelia managed
