Take it from the endearing wombat:

We can all create sh*t. What makes your sh*t remarkable is how your ideas can shape it.

The Sloth

Sloths are mainly known for being the slowest mammal in the animal kingdom.

When we talk about the sloth, it’s usually in the context of laziness, or as a creative alternative to calling someone a turtle.

Sloths move an average of 123 feet per day. That’s about 6 feet per minute. For comparison, humans walk an average of 270 feet per minute—45 times faster than our dear sloth buddy. These numbers don’t make the sloth look so great, but if we look past the pace of his life and take a closer look at his lifestyle, we’ll see that there is much more to this sluggish animal. Evolution has allowed the sloth to roam the earth (ever so slowly) for approximately 64 million years in a way that ensures the longevity of its resources.

With the lowest metabolic rate of any animal—it takes a sloth up to a month or more to fully digest its food—sloths can purposefully lower their metabolism in order to swim better. This allows them to hold their breath for up to 40 minutes underwater when needed. The sloth’s slow pace also enables it to act as a living ecosystem* for local organisms such as fungus, mites, moths, and even a species of algae that successfully camouflages the sloth—protecting it from predators.

Though your device never performs as impressively in battery saver mode as it does when its screen is at full brightness, sometimes dialing it down is essential to conserve your resources. While it’s awesome that you can fire on all pistons at all times during the day, it’s only a matter of time until your fuel runs out. Sloths are slow because they have to be, but for us humans it’s not that simple. In our world, there’s a stigma attached to asking for days off or refusing an invitation to go out. Our Instagram feeds may claim that “self-care” consists of indulging in long naps and face masks, but reaping the benefits of a true battery-saving session requires more than such short-term solutions can deliver. Here are two ways to take it slow and truly save up your precious battery life.

Meditate

Meditating is great because it forces you to focus on something other than the plethora of thoughts that are probably zipping through your brain right now. Meditation doesn’t have to be the corny, New Age-y experience that many influencers and “gurus” make it out to be. Simply sitting for 10 minutes on your bed or in a place that you find calming can allow you to reap the benefits of meditation.

To begin meditating, find a sitting position, either on a chair or the floor, that you’re truly comfortable in. Don’t worry about details like where your hands go—it’s not a photo shoot. The point is just to feel at ease. Set a timer for 10 minutes and begin focusing solely on your breathing, with your eyes either closed or open.
