MULLED BLOODY MARY

This classic brunch cocktail is surprisingly tasty when served hot so give it a try.

1 litre/4 cups good-quality tomato juice

1 lemon

1–2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, to taste

salt and ground black pepper, to season

80–125 ml/⅓–½ cup vodka

a pinch of celery salt

SERVES 4–6

Put the tomato juice in a large saucepan. Cut half of the lemon into slices and squeeze the juice from the remaining half into the pan. Add the lemon slices and Worcestershire sauce to the pan and season to taste. Bring to the boil and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and let cool for about 20 minutes. Stir in the vodka and add celery salt to taste. Serve at once in heatproof highball glasses.
