When, in connection with this book, I resumed my acquaintance with some species which are absent in the Gotland fauna, the Marsh Tit was found to be less common in my old home district of Södertörn, just south of Stockholm. Its numbers have decreased generally throughout the country and the population is said to have halved in the last thirty years according to recent estimates in the Swedish Ornithological Union’s book Fåglarna i Sverige (‘The Birds in Sweden’). Half of all the country’s Marsh Tits are supposedly found, surprisingly, in Småland. The reason for the species’ decline can possibly be explained by the fact that our woods contain fewer multi-layered deciduous stands, decaying broadleaf trees and marshy ground; or perhaps it is increased grazing pressure from wild ungulates that has reduced the herb populations at the woodland edge. No fully certain explanation is known. The Marsh Tit often forages among the plant vegetation and the ground layer, behaviour which is more uncommon for the Willow Tit. The populations have however, stabilised in the last decade and the number is estimated at 120,000 pairs.
