WHEN GROUPS GO BAD

How is it possible that brilliant individuals often collectively make bad and even disastrous decisions? How can obvious counter-evidence or differing perspectives be ignored? These questions haunted Yale psychologist Irving Janis as he studied the political process that led to a failure to protect Pearl Harbor during World War II, the poorly organized Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, and the unwavering belief by political and military leaders that the war in Vietnam was winnable. The result is a concept that changed how we view the ability of a group to make well-informed decisions. The term groupthink is so prevalent today that Yale political scientist Donald Green argues that it comes up at least once a day in conversations between colleagues and students.

Janis defined groupthink as a situation where participants “adhered to group norms and pressures toward uniformity, even when their policy was working badly and had unintended consequences that disturbed the conscience of the members.” In short, “members consider loyalty to the group the highest form of morality.”7 While volumes have been written about groupthink, it would be wise to consider key signs that it may be occurring in your church or Christian organization and how to prevent it.
