Chapter Eleven

Kiss her?

Bo’s entire body jolted at Toni’s request. “Huh?” He practically gulped the word.

Something had warmed between them on the carousel, some carefully packed-away bond that had sprung up in a place where they both had tucked away so many memories. It was all tangling together—the idea to make Faye believe they were reunited, the urge to protect her from everything pulling on her, his own resurrected feelings that were welling up stronger than his own control.

But had she really just asked him to kiss her?

Toni’s cheeks flushed, and it made Bo’s heart slam against his ribs. She squeezed his hand, tilting her head in the direction where Faye sat on the other side of the restaurant’s large front window. “She has to believe that we’re a couple, and she doesn’t right now. Not yet. I want her on a plane back to New York tomorrow, and if we go all-out, maybe we can make that happen.”

Speech felt a bit beyond him at the moment. “You’re serious. Kiss you. Here. Now.”

Toni evidently mistook his shock for hesitancy, and she pressed on. “I know it’s crazy, but you said it yourself. Faye won’t stop trying to convince me I’ve made a mistake. So we’ve got to convince her.”

Toni physically swayed in front of him, as if Faye exerted a magnetic field. Bo’s irritation with the woman quadrupled. This wasn’t mentorship or guidance, this was control. From the last woman he’d ever expect to allow such control.

Bo realized, at that moment, that he would do anything Toni asked to get her out from under Faye’s influence. Anything. Including kissing the living daylights out of her on the sidewalk of Main Street for all to see.

He could do it. Easily. It wasn’t as if they’d never kissed before. The challenge would be to kiss her and not mean it. Bo wasn’t sure that was even possible. It would show, wouldn’t it? His true feelings—now roaring up inside—would surely seep through somehow.

And that could be a disaster. It would topple the fragile balance they’d built up, the balance he’d hoped would slowly reconcile their estrangement. A wild leap forward like this—even at her request—might wreck it all.

Or it might not. After all, he owed her, and she’d asked. And he couldn’t even put into words how much he wanted to.

So he did.

Bo pulled her to him and kissed her. All the years and all the heartache seemed to melt away in a split second. Of course, it felt stiff and forced—how could it not?—but then there were flashes of closeness. The way those tendrils of her hair feathered against the back of his hand when he slipped his palm against her cheek. The way his lips fit perfectly over hers. She still smelled like wildflowers and sunshine but also something new that fascinated him. When she put her hand on his neck, he was lost, traveling back in time to when they were madly in love. Back when she’d been his heartbeat, the anchor of his wild and reckless spirit.
