Unforgettable Friend

“JUST A BOY, just an ordinary boy trying to get by . . . ” I sang the lyrics of the song in front of the mirror one Friday night as I made my way through the kitchen, listening to my silvery-grayish oval boom box. Usually people go out this day, but not me. I am the exception to the rule. I have homework and exams to prepare for—giving up my social life, for the desired academic success. I wish I would receive surprises in my life, but my life as a student is too plain and ordinary for that.

Oh well, I have to go back and focus my attention on my research project.

“Riinnnnnggggg!!!!” I tried to ignore the ring as I went back to my desk.

“Flor, the phone is ringing!!” said my mother, watching her favorite movie on television.

“It’s for you . . . ” She said as she handed the phone to me.

“Who is it, Mami?” I asked.

Who could be calling me so late? It was almost midnight. No way—everyone knows better!

“There is a boy on the line; his name is Jesús. He says he wants to speak to you; he sounds very sweet and polite. He might be one of your classmates,” she reassured me. I could not possibly think who was on the other end of the line.

“Hello?” I said.

“Hey!” a voice answered with excitement on the other end.

“Who is this?” I asked with a frown on my face.

“Ooh . . . have you forgotten about me?” It was more of a statement than a question.

I was shocked! I had not heard that voice in one year. It was my “old” best friend, Jesse. But because time had passed and distance separated us, the term “best friend” did not apply to him as before. Nine years had passed without seeing him. Why had he called after so long?
