BARN SWALLOW

Habitat: throughout, sea level to 3 000 m Length: 18 cm Status: common Palaearctic migrant

A common, well-known migrant, often occurring in large flocks, September–April. Upperparts are blue-black, the face and throat are red. The underparts are white or buffy and there is a dark band below the throat. Sexes similar, both have long tail streamers. Immature is much paler than adults and lacks the long outer tail feathers. The Angola Swallow (H. angolensis) is similar but smaller and has grey underparts and shorter outer tail feathers. Immatures of the two species may be confused, but Barn Swallow’s underparts are always paler.
