Chapter 14

Drak’ra Tesh, the Black Mountains of Coracin

“I say we make her a slave.”

“Over my dead body, Tynan. The girl is mine. There

is no we. And the only serving she will be doing is in

my bed.”

“I did all the work with the old Wolf. I got us home.

That’s far more consequential than what you did, just

hanging about, keeping her all to yourself!”

“Tynan, Dex, enough! Two years away, and now

you’ve been back ten minutes and my head is splitting

with your incessant bickering over an inconsequential

female arukhin! Perhaps we should all share her and be

done with it.”

Poppy sat stiffly on the stone steps in the great hall

of the dragon castle deep within the mountain, alternately glaring at the overbearing assholes who were

now wailing like preschoolers at the prospect of having

to share her and tugging at the heavy manacle that had

been fastened around her ankle. She felt decidedly

Princess Leia-ish, though thankfully without the space

bikini. She had also swung from being terrified to being

furious more times than she could count and had finally

settled somewhere in between.

Had she ever really wished for a dragon to sweep

her off her feet? Because having it happen in the most

literal sense had been far less appealing than the fantasy. The dragon men might be handsome, but she had no illusions about their rugged exteriors hiding hearts of gold. These two, in particular, were all muscle and no substance, from what she’d figured out. And they were fully prepared to have an epic fight for the honor of

screwing her brains out.

It might have been flattering, if they hadn’t also tried

to kill her father and then abducted her.

Poppy gave the manacle one more vicious tug,

wincing at the way it bit into her leg. They’d locked

her up after the shorter one, Dex, had tried to plant one

on her and she’d kneed him in the groin. It had been a

satisfying, if short-lived, victory.

“If you two persist in this, I’m going to order you

to fight to the death so that both of you shut up. As

that will only make one person here happy, and as that

person is not me, considering the mess and the loss of an

able-bodied young dragon, I suggest you come up with

viable alternatives.”

The dragon king, whose name Poppy was fairly

sure was Kassius, looked thoroughly annoyed with her

would-be keepers. She watched him glower at them,

impressed with the smoke that poured more thickly from

his nose and mouth the angrier he got. He was a little

older, with gray at his temples and a short-clipped beard,

and attractive in the dark way that all of his kind seemed

to be. Nothing like Lucien, though.

Lucien. God, she had to stop this. She was in mortal

peril—or at least in danger of finding herself attached

to the dragon equivalent of the dumb jocks she’d studiously avoided in high school. And to mentally escape

from the fear? She was picturing yet another dragon flying in on ebony wings to rescue her. There was no doubt in her mind that someone would come for her. There was also no doubt in her mind that it would not be Lucien Andrakkar.
