I thought it might come in handy for future fathering, since I’d learned that male foxes share in raising the pups. Knowing how he loved peanuts in the shell, I took a handful and made a peanut path to tempt him down a steep, mossy trail to the perfect fox nursery. When we got there, I continued talking softly, trying to get him to examine the den for himself. Instead he grew suspicious, then puzzled, and finally bored. He trotted off, leaving me standing there feeling quite silly.
