My last full day in Fidjadalen is a Saturday. As I descend from my final survey transect, I see that the old meadows around the farmhouse have sprouted tents, like gigantic polyester toadstools. As this is the end of the valley closest to the road and the car park for the Månafossen falls, weekenders have arrived to spend time in the great outdoors. One tent has appeared close to my camp, and three twenty-somethings have waded out onto a rock in the middle of the river to smoke. As I get chatting with them, they tell me that due to the prolonged dry spell and the resulting risk of wildfire, there is a nationwide ban on naked flames. It seems I’ve been breaking the law with my gas stove every breakfast and dinnertime, but then I haven’t really been following the Norwegian news much. The middle of the river is the only place my new neighbours feel they can smoke safely.

They’re all professionals, a policeman and two working in IT. They spend most of their weekends out in the hills, hunting, hiking, fishing and skiing. Like everyone else I’ve met, they were polite and friendly, and perhaps a bit baffled why anyone would travel from the UK to look at flowers.

It turns out they’re heading back to Stavanger the next morning and offer me a ride. After a dinner comprising the last of my supplies that don’t need cooking, I drop into sleep listening to the sound of the river and the ring ouzels chacking in the birch trees.
