Iâm screwed. Iâm literally chanting the word âsafeâ over and over in my head because my thoughts are decidedly unsafe. She turns towards me and the kimono slides open, exposing the smooth skin of her thighs. I try to keep my eyes on her face and when she looks up at me, it's somehow worse, like a punch to the stomach. Sheâs gorgeous like this, no make-up, still flush from her run, smelling clean and bright. Then she takes a bite of the croissant and closes her eyes on a soft moan and the word âsafeâ abandons my vocabulary and is replaced with need. Need to get closer. Need to touch. Need.
She blinks at me. âWhat?â she asks. Iâd like to say the sound of her voice snaps me out of my lust-filled haze, but it doesnât. Her voice is soft and husky and she might as well be touching me.
I lift one shoulder. âHavenât seen you eat in awhile.â I say, a smile tugging at my lips.
She looks away with a flush covering her cheeks. âNot sure how youâve managed that. Iâm always eating,â she says, biting into her croissant.
âMaybe Iâm not around you enough,â I tell her, and I thought I was saying it gently, but it sounds rough even to my ears, like an accusation. I try not to flinch. Her eyes widen and she sinks back into the couch, retreating. Shit. The only way to get this under control is not to look at her. So, I look forward, but damn it, I can still smell her, feel her body heat. I get up and cross to the window. Okay, this is better. I can feel the cold through the window and her scent is lessâ¦intense over here.
âIâm sorry about the party,â I stammer. Smooth. She looks down again. âI should have never pulled you into that closet,â I continue. âI didnât think about what would happen if we got caught. I justâ¦lost control.â I fumble.
Her eyes close on a sigh. I think sheâs trying to kill me. âI liked it,â she whispers. Wait, what?
âExcuse me?â I stammer.
She sighs again, picking imaginary crumbs off her robe. âI liked how it felt, with youâ¦â she says, a little more determinedly. âLosing control.â I just wait for her to continue. I have no choice. I want to hear it more than I want my next breath.
âIâm sorry for the way I behaved afterwards. I just panicked. I went into that pantry on my own two feetâ¦â she says to the floor.
âDid you want to?â I gently prod. Thatâs not what Iâm asking and she knows it. Iâm asking did she want me? Does she still? She looks up at me through her lashes and I am wrecked.
âA part of me knew you would be in there. And every part of me wanted it.â She says it so quietly, I almost think I imagined it. But the energy in the room has shifted as if she dropped an atom bomb.
