Workplace studies have shown that managers who believe their company has a reputation for supporting women in more male-dominated fields of science and technology are more likely to hire, develop and promote women.25

The downside of nudge is that we can be manipulated in the same way by the nudging of others. By not paying attention to whether something is an opt-in or opt-out, we may find ourselves committing unknowingly to initiatives without even realising that we have done so.

For example, our tendency to accept default options means that we are more likely to enrol in schemes that have an opt-out rather than an opt-in clause. Taking organ donation as an example, a scheme that requires donors to state positively that they want their organs to be used (opt-in) has a lower sign-up rate than if donors are required to state if they do not want their organs to be used (opt-out). Similarly, in order to increase retirement savings, British legislation now supports the default option for corporate pension plans, which automatically enrols employees unless they choose to opt out.
