Theologically, the popes’ arsenal had no weapons of sub-nuclear caliber. And not only was this theological assault made on a book that dealt mainly with political freedoms, but it was prompted by political advisers. “From Austria, Prussia, and Russia . . . came demands that Lamennais be severely reprimanded.”16 In fact, documents not released until John XXIII’s time prove that, despite all the theatrical roar of Rome’s thunder-machine, the pope was reluctant to move against Lamennais. He caved in to political pressure. “The dossier proves what surprises: that Gregory XVI himself was one of those who had no wish to condemn . . . If there was to be a condemnation of Lamennais, it could only be because Metternich forced it upon his client state, or because the engines of the Inquisition churned away and could not be stopped even by a pope.”17 It was the “engines of the Inquisition” that dressed up this political judgment with “God’s Word” and Hussites and “similar heretics.”
