6. Are there risks to my hot summer encounter(s) with men?

You may crave more sex in the summer, but to some women, it’s also a time to watch out for that summer sex. Sure, it’s romantic drinking bubbly champagne in a hot tub or playing Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity on your nearby beach. But according to some researchers, that’s not always the case.

Not to burst anyone’s summertime sex bubble, but there are some risks when it comes to summer lovemaking. One of the most studied is bacterial infections, those little creatures with their own section in the animal kingdom chart that can cause havoc just by passing by a human of any gender or age. According to studies from Oregon State University, bacterial infections increase as much as 17 percent with every ten-degree increase in air temperature. These bacteria are not the friendly ones you find in your stomach that break down the oysters you eat as an aphrodisiac. They are ones that love to create problems with your gastrointestinal tract and even cause respiratory problems such as pneumonia, illnesses whose occurrence can be up to 46 percent higher in the summer than the winter. Yes, winter may be called the “flu season,” but summer is truly the “bacterial infection season.”

Then there are the ubiquitous sexual encounters fancied in hot tubs. We’re talking temperatures rising even more here, and the swirling pools of water can cause one of the more painful infections in a woman: the yeast infection, or its just-as-painful cousin the urinary tract infection.

Men can’t escape these bacteria, either. Researchers at the University of California—San Francisco found that a man’s total body exposure to wet heat—including a hot tub and heated Jacuzzi—can cause fertility problems by impairing sperm productivity. Before you start thinking this is even better than a vasectomy, think again. It doesn’t get rid of all the sperm, just slows them down.

And it’s not only little bacteria that hinder the summer sex; it’s the big human men who want a summer fling. Yes, one of the risks of summers du sex is infidelity—especially in men. According to Dr. Ruth Houston, men cheat more often than women (or at least that’s who seems to be admitting it in the research studies) during the summer months. According to Houston, men cheat for sexual satisfaction, and since men are more visual when it comes to sex, seeing all those scantily clad women wrestling or playing volleyball or running or… well, you get the idea… makes men think about sex more than at other, much colder times of the year. Women don’t tend to cheat as much in the summer—they’re usually in a relationship for emotional satisfaction, so are less apt to go for the short-term flings. One caveat: According to research, most women feel that way, except for women in their early twenties and younger, all of whom seem to crave more cheating summer sex as much as men.
