Concepts of Print

Concepts of print (also called print concepts) refers to the fundamental principles of reading a book. This includes the basics of how to hold a book to the more abstract concept of what makes a word. The teaching of this concept ends with the realization that we combine words into sentences to communicate a message.

A child needs to know how to hold a book and where to start reading. She must learn to track words left to right and then continue from the end of one line to the beginning of the next line (return sweep). Although these print concepts are obvious to parents, they are not always obvious for your daughter. She will easily grasp these concepts if you read to her every day. Fill your home with books, magazines, and newspapers. This encourages the development of both print concepts and awareness.
