Chapter eighteen
Thursday morning Megan and I got right back to the files. With the other teams still pursuing their investigations, I wanted to gather as much information as possible for the briefing today. But before I got too deep, I made it a point to log all of our details from yesterday’s conversations into the system. While Megan began her research, I reviewed the notes from the others and checked on the progress from Donna Spears.
“Don’t forget to read the autopsy report on Artie,” Megan mumbled.
“I thought you were going to do that.”
“That was before we tripped to Myers. I don’t want to lose my train of thought here. And I’m having a hell of a time finding any kind of connection.”
“It’s got to be there. We need to find out where he spends his free time.”
She raised her eyes from the computer screen and shot me a steely gaze. “Free time? That sounds vaguely familiar. So did you go get horizontal last night?”
“Focus on your research.”
“I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”
I knew she would persist until I gave her something. “I drove by Myers house, just to get a look at him. Then I went to Sharkey’s for some pasta and scintillating conversation with Ted. That was it. And you don’t have to share your evening’s activities. I’ll use my imagination.”
Megan threw a pen at me. I saw it coming and snagged it in midair. “For your information, I stopped by Kathy’s house for a quick visit.”
I remembered Kathy. She was her cousin, a year younger than Megan, married a couple of years ago and with a new baby. Megan confirmed everyone was well. It made me wonder if the newborn had triggered some longings in Megan at her own chances for motherhood and a family. I pushed that aside and focused on work.
Unearthing the autopsy report, I slowly read through it. I noticed there were no bruises that would indicate a struggle. There had been no trace elements on the body, such as saliva or oils you might normally find with fingerprints. Had her killer been wearing gloves? There was nothing that stood out. The coroner determined that she had been smothered with one of the hotel pillows. The pillowcase had smears of Stephanie’s lipstick and some saliva that was matched to her. I looked up the toxicology report and punched in the number for Rudy Fen.
“Hello, Chene. Do you have another victim?”
“No, I just have some questions for you. I’m reviewing the toxicology report on the Grange girl. Do you have a copy?”
In the background I could hear his keyboard clicking. “Here you go. What are you looking for?”
“Was there anything in her system that you wouldn’t expect?”
Fen was silent for a moment. “There were some antibiotics, but it looks like a very low dose. Then the amount of alcohol in her system was quite high. For a woman of her build, unless she was a very heavy drinker, it would have been enough to disorient her.
