Chapter Summary

Rehoboam’s egotistical response to the northern tribes led to the division of the kingdom. Now the king of Judah (the southern kingdom), he incited Judah to worship other gods and reintroduced the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven from the land.

Most of the southern kings followed Rehoboam’s evil example, abandoning the Lord despite prophetic warnings.

Though his father Jehoshaphat was a godly ruler, Jehoram did not honor the Lord and lost control of vast amounts of territory.

Manasseh was incredibly evil; God’s judgment on him was swift and severe. While in captivity, Manasseh repented and the Lord allowed him to return to rule in Judah.

A few southern kings made the mistake of forming military alliances with pagan kings for protection.

Uzziah and Hezekiah were remarkable, successful leaders who were faithful to the Lord. During his fifty-two-year rule, Uzziah expanded the kingdom, fortified Jerusalem, reorganized the army, and developed a water supply for farming in the desert.

With Isaiah’s help, Hezekiah undertook some of greatest reforms in Judah’s history. He commanded the priests to repair and reopen the temple, organized a massive Passover festival, and challenged people in both Judah and Israel to destroy their idols.

After Josiah’s godly rule, Judah went into a freefall that ended with the exile. The Babylonians, under Nebuchadnezzar, invaded Judah three times. The third time they captured Jerusalem, looted and burned the temple, destroyed strategic buildings, and broke down defensive walls. Most of the people were taken to Babylon as captives.
