CHAPTER 5

The next day marked the start of autumn. Purl woke up to the rain pattering on the roof. She didn’t know how long she had slept. There was no one else in the bedroom. “I wonder how Stormy is doing?” she thought and ran to the kitchen in her pajamas. By the time the children had come home the previous evening, it was already quite late. Everyone had been so terribly tired that they fell asleep almost immediately. They had only managed to learn that the rescued mole’s name was Stormy and that he came from a different forest.

In the kitchen everyone was having breakfast and Stormy was telling his story.

“…and so I kept digging, digging, digging my tunnel — digging so fast that I might have set a record. And then I just went flying. I flew and flew and then, bam! I hit the water. And the water carried me farther, and farther, and farther, and then I don’t remember what happened after that, only that I thought, ‘Where could I be?’ ”
