On the screen, Charlie made everything look easy. Fans came to know and adore his funny style. The Tramp skidded around corners with one foot in the air. He threw a match over his shoulder and kicked it with his heel. He rolled his hat down the length of his arm and made it spring off his head without touching it. The Tramp did crazy somersaults—forward, backward, and three quarters. Just before mischief started, he arched his eyebrows or twitched his mustache.

Most important, the Tramp stood for the little guy who never gives up. His spirit shines through in the famous ending of The Tramp. He has just lost his sweetheart to a tall, handsome man. In a fade-out shot, he trudges along down a long road alone. A bandana on a stick is slung over his shoulder. Suddenly, the Tramp does a happy little hop and twirls his cane. Life might knock him down, but the Tramp always picks himself up again.

In 1916, Sydney called Charlie to New York to sign a new contract with the Mutual Film Corporation. Charlie took the train there. At a stop in Albuquerque, he heard cheers outside. Word had leaked that Charlie was on the train. Fans had mobbed the station to see him.
