How will the Antichrist persuade people to take the mark?

I don’t know if you’ve ever thought about this before, but I’ve often wondered how the Antichrist will be able to pull off the 666 scheme. After all, most people—even those who have little or no biblical knowledge—have heard about 666 and know that it’s associated with evil. There are an astounding number of Web sites devoted to the mysterious mark. Anyone who has seen popular movies like The Omen or has even a passing interest in rock music has heard of 666 and its association with the Antichrist. The point is that people everywhere know something about 666.

That being the case, how will the Antichrist convince billions of people to receive the mark on their bodies? Surely he would be shrewd enough to use 665 or 667 or any number besides the notorious 666.

One possible scenario is that the Antichrist will be so bold, blasphemous, and arrogant that he will be able to use his charisma and mesmerizing oratory to convince people to take this taboo mark. Though people will know that accepting the mark is an affront to God, they will take it anyway as a sign of open rebellion against the one true God.

A second possible answer is that the Antichrist may use the rapture of the church—the disappearance of millions of people—to play on people’s fears. He may claim to be the only one on earth who knows the explanation for what happened to all the people who were raptured. He may even claim to have caused the disappearances and threaten those who rebel against him that they will disappear too. He may issue some kind of promise that no more people will disappear or be “vaporized” provided they register themselves to take his mark. That may explain how he gets the whole world to unite under his political, economic, and religious system.

Another possible explanation is found in the chilling words of 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11, where the apostle Paul described the rampant deception that will flood the earth during the end times:
