Mendeleev’s table contained all the known elements in order of increasing relative atomic mass. Each row contained elements with the same joining power, and he swapped elements to suit this pattern. He left spaces for elements not discovered at the time.

Mendeleev’s table

Mendeleev’s 1869 table was horizontal, with similar elements in rows. He continued working and came up with several versions. He published a detailed explanation of his ideas in 1871. His most famous table was arranged vertically, the same way as the modern periodic table.

Mendeleev arranged the elements in order of increasing relative atomic mass, just like Newlands and Meyer had done. The horizontal rows were called series and were somewhat like the modern periods. Elements with similar properties were in vertical columns. These were called groups, just as they are today.
