Reelkirchen – Sunday, October 24, 1943

Supper Thursday evening with Klee and Tankmar Munchhausen at the Ritz and then went straight to the station to catch my train to Germany. We travelled via Aachen, Cologne, Duisburg, Essen, Dusseldorf and Dortmund, which resembled collectively one gigantic national cemetery. Hamm was the first undestroyed town through which we passed. Marietti was at Bielefeld to meet me and we took the Detmold-Meinberg tram. During the journey, the air raid warning sounded, and we had to complete our trip on foot. For an hour and a half hundreds of aircraft roared over our heads. Suddenly a bloodred conflagration lit up the sky over Kassel. An air battle was raging immediately overhead, and five bombers crashed to the ground in flames. We fled into a farmhouse, to avoid being hit by flying fragments. In the village of Tintrup near Reelkirchen incendiary bombs had set fire to a haystack, and one of the bombers dropped a bomb on the blazing bonfire, blowing the roof off a neighbouring farmhouse. And all this occurred in the immediate vicinity of Reelkirchen and the house to which Marietti and Georgine had been evacuated from Berlin. So much for the safety of the countryside!
