The G-spot

Hidden from view is the periurethral sponge, which wraps around the lower third of the urethra (see the Image 8.7). This network of blood vessels and erectile tissue makes up the G-spot, named after Dr Ernst Gräfenberg, a gynaecologist working in the first half of the last century. He described an area of heightened sensitivity on the front wall of the vagina, about halfway between the pubic bone and the cervix. The G-spot is part of a ring of spongy erectile tissue that includes the clitoris. It seems to be sensitive to erotic stimulation in some women but not in others.

You may be able to find your G-spot about 2.5 to 5cm inside your vagina, on the front wall adjacent to the urethra. It can be difficult to locate using your own fingers, so you might like to have your partner try using his fingers, or use a vibrator or a dildo. Use of a vibrator on the G-spot may lead to orgasm.

During partner sex, once a woman has become aroused her partner can begin gentle manual stimulation of the G-spot using two fingers on the front wall of the vagina about 3cm up, applying deeper pressure as the woman becomes more aroused. Many women report that stimulation in this area initially triggers a desire to urinate, as it presses on the urethra. This sensation usually disappears, and with further stimulation the G-spot can become highly pleasurable and congested. Partners sometimes report feeling swelling of the G-spot, described as a raised area about the size of a 20-cent piece on the front wall of the vagina. Once the area becomes pleasurable, deep and intense pressure with fingers or a vibrator on the G-spot can bring some women to orgasm. When you are with a partner, you might like to try a combination of clitoral stimulation (manual, oral or vibrator) with G-spot stimulation. The G-spot is also stimulated during woman-on-top or rear-entry intercourse.
