Carrie

I didn’t want the night to end. I was having so much fun decorating the tree with my mom, Gia, and Jason. He seemed to fit right in with the three of us, not even questioning how crazy we were. Gia was smiling a lot more, too, since she and Jason were able to commiserate over Kiera. He had to block Kiera’s number from his phone to keep her from calling, going out of his way to avoid her in school, even though she would always manage to find him.

“Jason, you did a great job with that star,” my mother said. “Last year, it took us four times to get it straight.”

“That’s because I’m a man and, unlike women, we always get it right the first time,” he joked.

“Oh god! Please!” Gia rolled her eyes, and we all began to laugh. “You better not go home and say that to your mom. She’ll smack you!”

“Oh, I don’t live with my mom. I live with my dad.”

Gia nodded. “Well, then, don’t say it to your dad’s girlfriend.”

My attention was quickly diverted to the sound of shattering glass. The ornament my mom had been holding fell from her hand onto the hardwood floor, breaking into pieces. I went into the kitchen to get the broom as Jason and Gia continued their banter.

“I guess I’m safe because he doesn’t have a girlfriend, either,” Jason said as I walked back into the living room, handing my mom the broom and dustpan.

“That’s cool. At least you don’t have to worry about dealing with stepparents. Not that Amber’s that bad,” Gia said, giving my mom a remorseful look.

My mother acted as if she wasn’t even listening as she continued to sweep up the mess on the floor.

“I have a step-dad that’s pretty cool, but as far as step-moms go, I don’t see that ever happening. Almost did when I was younger, though.”

My mom froze for a moment before getting up, looking like she was deep in thought.

“Oh, Jason, I forgot to tell you. Your dad is our plumber. He was over the other night, fixing the shower,” I said.

My mother smiled and nodded before hastily making her way into the kitchen with the shattered remnants of the ornament in the dustpan.

“Did he fix it? He’s got a major learning curve when it comes to plumbing,” Jason laughed.

“Yeah, it’s all fixed,” my mom said, walking back into the living room and focusing on the tree once again.

“Ben Wilder is the world’s worst plumber,” Jason said.

Gia took her attention from the beads she was stringing along the tree and lifted her head. “Your dad’s name is Ben?” she asked. He nodded. Gia quickly turned her attention to my mother, giving her the slightest of smiles.

“Gia, you missed a spot over here,” my mother interrupted as Gia stood silently, staring at her with a full-fledged grin on her face. “Come on. Let’s fix it!”

“Okay, okay! Calm down, Mom. Everything will be just fine,” Gia giggled.

The rest of the night flew by way too quickly.
