Chapter nineteen

Tobias and Charlotte checked on the injured men, who were doing much better, then settled into their seats. Lanie was stretched out, sleeping peacefully, and he lifted her into his arms and slid into the seat, gratitude flowing through him that he hadn’t succumbed to the fight with the outlaw.

He was still here to raise Lanie.

A flurry of emotions engulfed him. He could have easily lost his life during the altercation with Fraley. Had Charlotte’s swift actions not distracted the outlaw, there was no telling who would have won the altercation.

Charlotte. He recalled how she’d felt in his arms. Like she belonged there. Holding her had been unexpected, but a welcome reprieve to all that happened.

“Uncle Tobias?” Lanie’s groggy voice interrupted his thoughts. “Why is your face hurt?” She reached a hand toward his cheek.

“I’m all right, Lanie.”

Charlotte reached over and patted Lanie’s head. “Do you feel better? You must have been exhausted.”

“What’s ‘sausted’?”

Tobias squeezed his niece’s hand. “It means tired.”

“Oh.”

“Do you feel better rested after your nap?” Charlotte asked.

“Yes, and I can’t wait to meet the aunts Grandma Lydie told me about.” Lanie reached for Charlotte’s hand as they rode the remainder of the way to the final depot.

Once they reached the station, a sheriff and two deputies greeted the passengers, explaining that the man who’d attempted to rob the train was Chuck “Bowlegged” Fraley, a member of a three-man gang wanted throughout Wyoming for robbery, murder, and assault. Tobias informed the sheriff of what had happened on the train before he, Charlotte, and Lanie continued on their way to Prune Creek.
