If they say no, tell them you understand, and that if they change their mind you’re ready to spring into action.

Keep the dialogue open. Look at other ways to help them access information that may assist them — such as books or podcasts, for instance. Try again another time.

Keep supporting them. Try not to be judgemental or feel disappointed that they’re ‘not doing enough’ to help themselves. Instead, accept their response at this time and continue to stand by them, so that they don’t feel isolated, alone or rejected.

I’m reminded here of a passage from E.B. White’s classic children’s tale, Charlotte’s Web, where Wilbur the pig asks Charlotte, ‘Why did you do all this for me? I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.’

Charlotte simply replies, ‘You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing.’
