Jane’s Story (First year, continued)

Many of Jane’s friends were already widowed when her husband died. She and John were in their 70s. Helen and her husband were in their 50s. That has to make a difference. Here’s what Jane tells us, “This community rallied around me: food, flowers, offers of housing and transportation, invitations to dinner, bridge. I appreciated bear hugs from the men we knew, married ones, too. Everyone needs four hugs a day! Our minister was a great help immediately. All of us were able to speak of my husband easily and naturally. Most of my friends have suffered similar losses so are very sympathetic and supportive. We feel comfortable talking about our husbands but do not dwell on our losses.

“The loss is real; heart-ache ever present. Yet I could not wish him back when his life was not worth living. When I speak to my friends who are widowed, I give them opportunities and leads to talk about their husbands and how they are coping. They are free to pick up on this or avoid it. As far as barriers or friends who are unkind, these experiences have not come to me so far.”
