2. Objectives
Though dealt with in the blueprint, the objectives should now be rewritten with a one-year timeframe – giving you the opportunity to practically re-evaluate them. Objectives that are pursued without vigour or enthusiasm – or perhaps undertaken with an inner conviction of eventual defeat – are pointless. Indeed, they may not even be your goals: perhaps given to you by a parent or teacher or from reading a magazine. They must also be achievable – not immediately but eventually, which makes your one-year objectives a strong benchmark as well as your primary focus. What has to be achieved within the next 12 months for you to know that the changes being made are embedded, supportable and, importantly, moving you towards confidence via strong achievement? As with self-efficacy in Part Two, you must set yourself targets that are ambitious but not beyond your capabilities.
In this respect it may be worth working backwards. Looking ahead as our future stretches over the horizon is almost impossible, because even minor changes can take us way off course (as any navigator can tell you). However, if we – mentally – go straight to our perceived destination, and look back to our current spot, it’s far easier to develop an accurate path between the two points.
This is no different to Covey’s recommendation to start with the end in mind, although – for your Campaign Plan – the ‘end’ should be no further than your one-year horizon, which can be written as a series of bullet points. For instance, our art example could have the following one-year objectives:
Company called Tomorrow’s Art Ltd registered and trading
10 promising artists signed and supplying art on an exclusive basis
Entire customer base researched and approached
First corporate customer won – and project executed
Company website and brochure produced, showcasing our first completed project.
