âWeâre not 10 stone any more. And the quiffâs gone.â Steve and Neil remain best pals, seen here taking in the delights of Miami on holiday.
Neil has had a variety of jobs since. Heâs worked for a T-shirt company licensing music imagery, including the branding of legendary jazz label Blue Note; he set up a whatâs on guide for Leeds; heâs worked as a graphic designer. Most recently have been jobs with Bettys and Taylors (the tea-and-cake company here in Harrogate), Harrogate Festival and, currently, that marketing position at Leeds University.
Sandwiched in the middle of those were a handful of years spent at his beloved Leeds United, running their publications â programmes, annuals, yearbooks and the clubâs own magazine, Leeds Leeds Leeds. âI grew up a Leeds fan. I used to hold business meetings in the dug-out!â This was around the turn of the millennium, at the time that the club reached the Champions League semi-finals. âAh!â says Steve. âThe glory years!â
Steve doesnât tinker with music these days. âI see being in a band as a past life,â meaning thereâs never been the slightest inclination to consider squeezing into the gawdy old cycling gear to reunite and revisit that past life. âAs old men,â asks Neil, âcould we still be playing âThe Morning After the Sixtiesâ? Not really. Weâre not 10 stone any more.â He rubs his head. âAnd the quiffâs gone.â
Neil is, though, in a garage band called the Bad Daddies. âWe do covers in the way that Age of Chance covered âKissâ and âDisco Infernoâ. Iâve no inclination to write new material. To do that, you have to have something to say. And I think we said it all back then.
âBut Iâd forgotten how great it was to be in a room with two, three, four other people and play music, to lock in together, to be in a groove to the point where you donât have to think about it. Which is where we were back then, all those years ago. We were so tight. We were shit-hot.â
