‘We’re not 10 stone any more. And the quiff’s gone.’ Steve and Neil remain best pals, seen here taking in the delights of Miami on holiday.

Neil has had a variety of jobs since. He’s worked for a T-shirt company licensing music imagery, including the branding of legendary jazz label Blue Note; he set up a what’s on guide for Leeds; he’s worked as a graphic designer. Most recently have been jobs with Bettys and Taylors (the tea-and-cake company here in Harrogate), Harrogate Festival and, currently, that marketing position at Leeds University.

Sandwiched in the middle of those were a handful of years spent at his beloved Leeds United, running their publications – programmes, annuals, yearbooks and the club’s own magazine, Leeds Leeds Leeds. ‘I grew up a Leeds fan. I used to hold business meetings in the dug-out!’ This was around the turn of the millennium, at the time that the club reached the Champions League semi-finals. ‘Ah!’ says Steve. ‘The glory years!’

Steve doesn’t tinker with music these days. ‘I see being in a band as a past life,’ meaning there’s never been the slightest inclination to consider squeezing into the gawdy old cycling gear to reunite and revisit that past life. ‘As old men,’ asks Neil, ‘could we still be playing “The Morning After the Sixties”? Not really. We’re not 10 stone any more.’ He rubs his head. ‘And the quiff’s gone.’

Neil is, though, in a garage band called the Bad Daddies. ‘We do covers in the way that Age of Chance covered “Kiss” and “Disco Inferno”. I’ve no inclination to write new material. To do that, you have to have something to say. And I think we said it all back then.

‘But I’d forgotten how great it was to be in a room with two, three, four other people and play music, to lock in together, to be in a groove to the point where you don’t have to think about it. Which is where we were back then, all those years ago. We were so tight. We were shit-hot.’
