Women’s Work

Back in the pioneer days, many women worked hard, but they didn’t leave their homes to go to work. Their work was at home, and they had their hands full.

Remember, this was before supermarkets, refrigerators, dishwashers, electric lights, and store-bought clothes. It was a big job to take care of a home and family, and the women did most of it. Women gardened and grew vegetables. They milked cows, collected eggs, and churned butter. They cooked the family meals and baked the family breads and pies. They canned fruits, made jelly, and preserved meats to last through the winter. They boiled lye to make soap and collected beeswax to make candles. They spun, knitted, and wove cloth, making blankets and much of the clothing for their families. Then, of course, the clothes got dirty, and the women washed them, too!

As if that weren’t enough, pioneer women in America did one of the most important jobs done anywhere at any time—they raised the children. Their job was to teach their children how to be good people and how to be good helpers around the home and farm. Many mothers taught their children to read before they ever sent them off to school.
