For a long time, these early people kept alive by hunting, fishing, and gathering wild berries, nuts, and fruit. As time passed, however, some of these early Americans began to grow their own food, especially the people who lived farther south, where it was warmer and easier to grow crops. These crops, such as corn and beans, gave them plenty to eat. When people can grow enough food to eat, they don’t have to keep moving around and chasing their dinner. They can stay put and make their homes in one place.

Little by little, the ancestors of the first Americans did what people in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia had done thousands of years before. As they learned to farm and built their homes, the first American civilizations were established. They settled down, they founded towns and cities, they made works of art, and some of them learned to write.

Let’s look back in history to learn about three early American civilizations: the Mayan civilization, the Aztec civilization, and the Inca civilization.
