Ulysses S. Grant.

As soon as he learned of the firing on Fort Sumter, Grant began organizing volunteers in his town. He entered the war as a colonel in charge of an Illinois regiment. (A regiment was a group of a thousand soldiers.) President Lincoln soon made Grant a general.

Grant led the Union to its first important victories of the war. In February 1862 his Union troops captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee. When the Confederate commander at Fort Donelson realized his troops were outnumbered, he sent Grant a message to see if he would like to make a deal. Grant sent back a message saying, “No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted.” After a three-day battle, the Confederates at Fort Donelson surrendered completely. News of the battle spread quickly. Northerners joked that Grant’s initials—U.S.G.—stood for “Unconditional Surrender” Grant.

Grant’s leadership and bravery impressed everyone, including President Lincoln. “I can’t spare this man,” Lincoln said, “he fights.” Lincoln had finally found the general who could bring victory and end the war. In the spring of 1864, Lincoln placed Grant in charge of the entire Union Army.
