How Do People Feel in Your Company?

The “culture” around you—the world you are responsible for—doesn’t have to be a workplace. It can be your company, or the company you keep—from your colleagues and friends to your family and community. In my career, I’ve focused on building and nourishing the cultures of large corporations, but every workplace has a culture—from the biggest tech company to your local Main Street shop. More importantly, every family, friendship, charity, school, club, or sports team has a culture, too. Culture evolves any time that people connect together as a group or society. It is through culture that people define themselves within the group, share values, and belong. I want to share how tikkun can be applied toward building a meaningful culture anywhere.

Have you ever stopped to think about the atmosphere you create around you, at home and at work? The kind of culture you have created? And how you could, bit by bit, make it better?

From my own experiences of negative culture, I had come to know that a nurturing environment is one where people can be themselves—where there’s no such thing as hair that’s too curly or hands that are too expressive. Somewhere everyone has a place and the space to grow.

As you can probably tell, I see similarities between my role at work and my role in my family. I’m not suggesting that your loyalty, commitment, or feelings should be the same for your work as they are at home, but it’s important to remember that you are the same soul wherever you go. And you shouldn’t feel as though you need to put on a mask and pretend to be someone else in order to fit in.

At home and at work, I try to repair my world. I want to share a few ideas with you here, and suggest how, one step at a time, we can improve ourselves and the culture around us.
