Al Qaeda

Al Qaeda was founded in the late 1980s by Osama bin Laden and other terrorists. Born in 1957, bin Laden was the son of a wealthy Saudi Arabian businessman. In 1979, bin Laden joined a rebel group fighting in Afghanistan. He got others to join. And he also gave a great deal of money to buy weapons for the rebels.

Al Qaeda members belong to the religion of Islam. Islam is a peaceful, loving religion with more than 1.6 billion followers worldwide. These followers are called Muslims, and about 3.4 million live in the United States.

Islam has never been in favor of terrorism. Yet Al Qaeda members believe that killing enemies is holy work. Members of Al Qaeda believe there is a Christian-Jewish alliance trying to destroy Islam. Osama bin Laden believed that the United States was the leader of the alliance. That was the reason for his hatred.

After the attacks on September 11, the United States searched for Osama bin Laden for almost ten years. Finally, he was killed by a team of US Navy SEALS in 2011, in a raid on the house where he was hiding in Pakistan.
