The first Neanderthal skeleton was built in 1911. It had a curved spine, which gave the figure a slouched, hunched-over appearance—like an ape. Because of this, for years people thought of Neanderthals as “knuckle-draggers.”

But first impressions are often wrong: That first skeleton belonged to an elderly Neanderthal who’d suffered from arthritis. Neanderthals walked upright.

We do know something else set moderns apart from Neanderthals. Something other than the thinking brain: the creative mind. Art.
