The most famous mosaic found in Pompeii is the Alexander Mosaic that originally was on the floor of the House of the Faun. (Today it is displayed in a museum in Naples, and a copy is at Pompeii.) Measuring nineteen feet by ten feet three inches, it shows the Greek hero and king Alexander the Great defeating Darius, King of Persia, who is shown driving a chariot. More than one and a half million pieces were needed to complete the design!

Most mosaics in Pompeii were far smaller and often much simpler in their designs. In many houses, there would be a mosaic just inside the front door showing a fierce dog with the words “Cave Canem” (Beware of the Dog) underneath. It was one method of warning off robbers—whether there was actually a guard dog in the house or not!
