A scanner can be used to help rescue a tired old image (above) – this is a print of the life cycle of the silkworm. It is dated 1747, and is badly creased, stained and rather dull. However, once it has been scanned and edited (below), with all the imperfections carefully removed, the image has been brought back to life and is clearer and brighter than ever before.

When it comes to scanning a photograph such as this one of a peacock butterfly, there is no point in going below 200dpi – the quality will be too poor – and little point in going above 300dpi, as you will not be able to tell the difference unless you are planning on producing very large prints. The sequence of cropped images below demonstrates this point.
