NOTES

1. The words “before his death” can refer, says Dakake, to his “seeming death” mentioned in 4.17 or to the way God takes Jesus up from life, keeping him for the final day, when he will die and be resurrected with the rest of humankind:

Islamic tradition holds Jesus will return near the end times to fight the Antichrist (al-Dajjal) and will thereafter eventually die and be resurrected with the rest of humanity. (SQ 263)

Dakake interprets in the same way the verses where the infant Jesus speaks, saying:

Peace was on me the day I was born, and will be on me the day I die and the day I am raised to life again. (19.33)

Of this she writes:

He will be free from fear on the day he dies (after his return to earth: see 43.61, commentary) and on the day he is raised alive with the rest of humanity (see commentary on 4.157-59). (SQ 773)
