Precautions and Possible Pitfalls

Just because a teacher doesn’t have a student (or students) coming out to him or her doesn’t mean that teacher doesn’t have any gay or lesbian students in the classroom. Given many research studies, which estimate that one in ten persons is homosexual, it stands to reason that in a class of 30 students, a teacher might have three who are struggling with sexual orientation issues. Teachers shouldn’t assume that if no one is coming forward to complain about harassment or name calling that the “problem” doesn’t exist.

Students may pose questions to the teacher about homosexuality (is it okay, why are some people heterosexual and some people homosexual, etc.). It is not advisable to get into a discussion of right and wrong, okay or not okay. However, telling students that every person is entitled to respect, acknowledgement, and acceptance is not only okay, it is the right thing to do.
