It is claimed that type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease; there is however, a lack of knowledge about certain aspects of this condition, as the fact sheet admits,
“The cause of type 1 diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge”
By comparison, it is claimed that the causes of type 2 diabetes are known and that, according to the fact sheet, this type of diabetes is,
“…largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity.”
The reasons for such a distinction between two forms of the same disease are not explained.
One point of particular concern is that type 2 diabetes is increasingly prevalent among children, as the fact sheet indicates,
“Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring increasingly frequently in children.”
