THE PROBLEM OF TRANSPORT

God’s saying ’ārūwr ’attāh to the serpent in Genesis 3:14a was a performative act. The content of the statement is descriptive: you are in the permanently intransitive state of having been declared diminished, downgraded, and the like, more than any other animal. Verses 14b–15 continue by describing the nature of the serpent’s ’ārūwr-edness: “on your belly tēlēk and a clod you eat all the days of your life.”11 The import of this half-verse is that by virtue of what the serpent is and how he transports himself, he is declared to be devalued retroactively, as in the case of Jeremiah’s birthday.
