Witnesses claimed to have seen John Wilkes Booth meet with his secret fiancée, Lucy Hale, both on the morning and late afternoon of April 14. If one or both of the meetings did occur, they would have been a moment of decision for the conflicted actor: Did he keep his promise to marry the young woman and return to his life of fame and fortune as an actor, as he had told his mother he wanted… or did he stay on the path he had set himself, a path that would certainly lead to infamy, exile, and perhaps even death? In the end, Booth’s desire to make a name for himself, to “live in history” as he once put it, was too great. He chose infamy.
