CHAPTER 5
Iâve never met a mann like him.
Carolyn stood in the backyard while Atlee inspected the roof. Heâd already looked at the foundation and hadnât seen any problems there, which was a huge relief. Sheâd told him about the fallen shingles before he climbed up on the roof, and hopefully he wouldnât find anything else wrong with it.
She should be in the phone shanty calling the local paper and putting out an ad for bakery help. Karen and Ivy had offered to work for her for free, but sheâd turned them down. Probably a dumb decision, like a lot of the other decisions sheâd made lately, but she couldnât ask them to change their minds now. Besides, sheâd set aside some money to hire and pay two people for at least a month.
But instead of calling the paper, she was watching Atlee, praying silently he wouldnât fall. He was in good shape, but neither of them were spring chickens, and it would take only one slip for him to fall off the roof. She couldnât live with herself if that happened. This man had planned to be on vacation, and now he was doing all this work for herâwhich not only touched her but confused her. Why was he so eager to help her? She was a stranger to him, and they had only their Amish faith in common.
He was also attractive, something she couldnât stop focusing on while he was inspecting the roof.
He was up there only a few minutes, but it felt longer. Finally, he descended the ladder. When his feet touched the ground, she went to him, thankful he wasnât injured. âAre you okay?â The question flew out of her mouth before she realized it.
âIâm fine.â He pushed his hat from his forehead, and she saw the perspiration on his skin. Today was the hottest one yet, and a twinge of guilt hit her.
âIâll get you a drink,â she said, rushing inside. She filled another cup with water and was prepared to take it outside when she heard the squeak of the screen door. Sheâd meant to oil that last week.
When she gave him the drink, he downed it, then smiled.
Such a warm smile. Her palms grew damp, and she thrust her hands behind her.
âOther than the missing shingles, the roof looks gut. And since I didnât see any problems with the foundation, it probably wonât take me more than a week to finish up here.â
âReally?â Hope filled her heart.
âReally.â He grinned again.
âBut I donât want to take up all yer time here in Birch Creek. What about Thomas and his familye?â
âI can extend mei stay.â
âIsnât there someone waiting for you back home?â
His gaze met hers. The same shadow that passed over his eyes when he mentioned his late wife had returned.
He tilted his head. âWhat about you?â
She looked at the hardwood floor and the tip of her shoe, realizing he didnât answer her question. She was prudent enough not to pry. âWhat about me?â
âAnyone . . .
