Midwives run antenatal classes before you give birth. You can ask them to repeat information or speak with them after a class to ask questions.

These classes give you a chance to meet other pregnant people and learn from each other, even if you just want to watch and listen. Sometimes you make friends with other parents and your babies can play together as they get older.

You can take your partner or a friend for support and confidence. They may help you remember what you’ve learned and they will learn with you.

Here are some of the things you learn in antenatal classes:

• What happens in labour and how your baby is born.

• Relaxation, including during labour.

• What to pack for you and your baby for delivery, if you’re giving birth in hospital.

• Emotions and feelings in pregnancy and after birth.

• How to care for your baby, what your baby needs, how to hold your baby.

• Why your baby cries and how to work out what this means.

• How to play with your baby.

• How to feed your baby, breastfeeding, bottle feeding or a mixture. With sensory issues, you may find breastfeeding uncomfortable and messy, but parents with autism and disabilities can manage it with support.
