Geerat Vermeij was born in the Netherlands. He moved with his family to the United States when he was three. His parents thought that the United States would offer the best opportunities for their blind son. Today Vermeij is one of the world’s experts on sea shells. He studies shells from all of the world’s oceans. Each shell in his large collection is labeled in Braille so he knows what it is and where it was found.
