What Did You Do to My House?

Trading Spaces was a popular television show that burst onto the scene in 2000. Many people often tell me it was one of their favorite HGTV shows, not realizing it was never on HGTV. HGTV was initially offered the American format rights to the UK show Changing Rooms but passed on the licensing deal. The rights went to TLC, and Trading Spaces was eventually born. The producers created a provocative show with sometimes controversial designs, which often led to tears and tantrums. Homeowners didn’t always like how their neighbors had chosen to transform their house. The epitome of this was illustrated during one of its most well-known episodes, where grass was glued to the walls of one of the renovated rooms. Predictably, the homeowners hated it.

While many television producers make intentional choices to create drama in their programs, HGTV chose a different route—one that aligned with our mission.

I’ll never forget sitting in a meeting where the head of programming clearly stated, “The show may be a hit, but it isn’t us. On HGTV every show has a happy ending.” We were very certain about what we were creating. We knew what we valued and what our viewers valued. That clarity made programming decisions for the top programming executives easier.

HGTV took a lot of flak for not taking the rights to that show. Many critics say that HGTV passed on a fantastic ratings opportunity. In hindsight, I see the brilliance of restraint in HGTV’s decision not to create the program that Changing Rooms and eventually Trading Spaces became. Even though it was a ratings juggernaut for TLC, we can say we stuck true to the integrity of who we were and what we valued most.

When people look back on their lives, regrets typically come from decisions they fell into, didn’t take the time to process, or had no filter for knowing whether it was a good or bad choice. These decisions ultimately violated who they were at their core. Just as in business, there is power knowing your own core values. They provide boundaries, giving confidence and clarity to the right and wrong endeavors in your life.
