Keen mark makers

Anne Hughes and Sue Ellis highlight how children need to learn how writing is used, as well as how they can write: ‘Problems may arise if the quest for perfect letter formation becomes a barrier to children understanding the other aspects of writing: the pleasure that writing can give to writer and reader; the power it has to influence actions; the composition skills and knowledge required for writing for different purposes etc. In short how writing is used in the adult world.’ (page 5, Writing it Right )

Four-year-olds can steadily learn that there is a standard way of writing and they need adults to make explicit what letters look like, how to form the letters, the relationship between the letter symbols and sounds, and how letters are grouped together to form words. In order to help four-year-olds, adults themselves need to be able to consider literacy in all its separate parts.

Parents often feel that learning to read and write is a technical skill best taught by ‘experts’. Consequently, they easily underestimate how much children learn at home through ordinary activities. Early years practitioners can support the confidence of parents by explaining and showing how much children need to connect the technical skills with everyday use of literacy.
