The Philistines

From the time of Samson, the Philistines had always been Israel’s oppressors. They were thorns in Israel’s flesh. In truth, the Philistines were giants and mighty warriors. The confrontation between David and Goliath attests to this. At some point in David’s multiple attempts to thwart Saul’s attempts at assassination, he became a friend of the Philistines. In fact, when Saul was told that David had fled to the Philistines, he stopped his pursuit, knowing only too well that the Philistine army was far superior to his.

“Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the valley of Rephaim, so David inquired of the Lord, ‘shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?’ The Lord answered him, ‘go for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you’” (2 Samuel 5:18-19).

David did not trust in chariots or horses, but in the might of God. While he had no problem overcoming the Jebusites, when it came to the Philistines, he knew that he needed to consult with God. When God makes your decisions, the most powerful satanic strategy imaginable cannot effectively threaten you.

Jebusites will always be in our lives to threaten and prevent us from attaining our true destiny. Although the gates and the city walls may be sealed, God will always provide water shafts that we can use as alternative routes for assault. God is specialized in making a way where there seems to be no way. The Philistines will try their best to oppress us, and keep us in bondage. These people will make us feel that we are good at nothing. They can only succeed if we obey them, and agree to be under their control. They are the kind of people who use others in order to achieve their own agenda. Think for a moment. Are you tired of being controlled by other people? Are you too fearful to take a significant step in your life because somebody is threatening you? If this is the truth in your life, then the good news is,

“So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

When you are willing to change the way, you think and receive the mind of God, you will become free in your mind. So often, we are victims of what we have been over the years, and sometimes we are even sincerely wrong in our sincerity. David knew the importance of the Ark of the Lord, which symbolized God’s presence. He brought it back to Jerusalem, subdued the Philistines, and defeated the Moabites, and God led him to many more victories. Yet, despite all the successes and victories, David’s life was about to be changed.

5. Political Disaster

After all his military victories, and the ensuing time of peace, the Bible records a turning point in David’s personal life. Soon, it became clear that the facade of extraordinary success that was David’s public image was a far cry from what prevailed in his private life.
