THE CHASE

Now that I knew the men wanted our samples, it was obvious that they had come from an oil rig.

In addition to the driver’s shirt, there was grease all over their clothes, the result of working with machinery. The men also had the big, sinewy builds of people who did hard labor. Someone at the rig must have spotted us poking around the area of the oil leak and dispatched the toughest, least morally conscious workers they could find to steal the samples from us.

The moment I saw the guns, my heart leaped into my throat, but Cass and Doc remained surprisingly calm. Both of them kept up the charade of being normal fishermen.

“Easy now,” Cass said. “These water samples aren’t for any government agency. They’re only for us. To help us locate the fish.”

“I don’t care what you say they are,” the leader of the men snarled. “If you don’t hand them over, we’re gonna feed you to the sharks.”

I turned to Cass, concerned. “That’s a really good argument. Maybe we should just do what he said.”

“I agree,” Doc said, eyeing the men cautiously.

Cass gave Doc a look of betrayal, but then nodded agreement. “All right. I see your point.” She turned her attention to the case full of samples, but instead of lifting the entire thing up to hand over, she only picked up one test tube. It was empty, but she clutched it in her hand to hide that from the men. “This is the most important one,” she informed them. “So I guess you’ll be wanting it first?”

“We want all of them,” the leader said.

“And you’ll get them,” Cass told him. “But you need to be really careful with this one. Because the liquid inside is explosive.”

“Explosive?” one of the gunmen asked worriedly. It was the first time he had spoken, and his tough facade now cracked in concern.

“Very explosive,” Cass warned ominously. “Catch!” With that, she tossed the test tube onto the other boat.

She threw it perfectly, into the space between all three of the men, just far enough away that none of them could actually reach it.

The men responded in different ways. The leader dove to catch it. The two gunmen tried to escape the blast. One hit the deck, curled into the fetal position, while the other leaped overboard into the water.

The empty test tube shattered harmlessly in the speedboat. But it had done exactly what Cass had hoped, distracting the thugs from pointing their guns at us.

Cass immediately leaped to the stern of our Zodiac and fired up the engines. We took off so fast that Doc and I were thrown off our feet; we quickly left the other boat behind.

Although we weren’t out of danger yet.

Behind us, the two men who were still in the speedboat helped the one who had jumped overboard clamber back in. Their boat was facing the wrong direction, but it didn’t take them long to turn it around and come after us once again. Their motors had more horsepower than ours, which meant we wouldn’t be able to outrun them.
